Enjoy children’s dental care in a quality dentistry practice

Having your child visit the dentist for the first time can be exciting, but it may also be a little intimidating for some children. San Jose, California area dentists Dr. Natalie K. Provenzano, and Dr. Simel are pleased to offer children’s dentistry in Dr. Natalie K. Provenzano DDS, Inc, which also services adults. Generations of family members can visit the practice, and they are always excited to meet children coming in for the first time!

What can I expect during my child’s first visit to the dentist?

Dr. Provenzano and her associates understand that not only are children often anxious about their first dental visit, but parents can be, too! Knowing what to expect helps in terms of feeling more comfortable with each visit. When children arrive at the dentist for their first visit, we help them feel at ease by providing a quick education on what we will be doing during that day. We let children see the instruments our team uses to become familiar with them being used in their mouths. Our team knows how to manage children and provide the best chairside manner to ensure they are content from start to finish!

When should my child have their first dental appointment?

The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics both suggest that children have their first dental visit by their first birthday, preferably after their first tooth erupts from the gum line.  We like to establish a “dental home” at our office for children, in the hope of developing a focus on the importance of dental health for life. We keep the appointments for very young patients short, fun, and free of fear, while being thorough.  Our team wants to establish a healthy dental relationship for children, to prevent development of a fear of dentistry in the future. Children should then be scheduled for a cleaning and evaluation every six to nine months following this first appointment. That allows our dental team to monitor for any problems that might occur during the development of the smile and help provide preventive services such as sealants or fluoride applications to protect the teeth from cavities and disease.
