The Price of Skipping Aftercare: 5 Tooth Extraction Complications You Can Avoid

Extracted Tooth After Care in San Jose CA

When you undergo a tooth extraction, your healing journey does not end when you leave the dental chair. The recovery process is just beginning. At Natalie K. Provenzano DDS, Inc., Dr. Natalie Provenzano and her in-office Oral Surgeon, Dr. Or Simel, prioritize equipping patients with clear and practical aftercare instructions to ensure smooth healing in San Jose, California. Unfortunately, some patients unintentionally neglect these guidelines and face avoidable complications. Knowing what can go wrong is key to ensuring everything goes right if you are preparing for or recovering from an extraction.

Here are five complications that can occur if you do not follow aftercare instructions after a tooth extraction.

1. Dry Socket – A Painful Setback

Dry socket is one of the most dreaded complications after a tooth extraction. It occurs when bone and nerves are exposed due to the blood clot at the extraction site dislodging or dissolving too soon. This can lead to intense pain and delay your healing process. Following instructions like avoiding straws, smoking, or aggressive rinsing can significantly reduce your risk. Dry socket not only hurts, but it often requires follow-up visits for dressing changes and additional care.

2. Infection – An Unwelcome Visitor

Infection can develop if bacteria enter the extraction site, which is especially vulnerable in the early days after a procedure. Ignoring recommendations such as keeping the area clean, taking prescribed medications, and avoiding certain foods can increase your risk. Symptoms of infection may include swelling, pus, a bad taste in your mouth, or fever. Prompt treatment is critical, and prevention through aftercare is far easier than managing a full-blown infection.

3. Excessive Bleeding – Not Just a Nuisance

While some bleeding is normal after a tooth extraction, prolonged or excessive bleeding may signal that something is wrong. Skipping aftercare steps like gently biting on gauze, resting, and keeping your head elevated can prolong bleeding. Physical activities too soon after the procedure can also increase blood pressure and worsen the bleeding. Following your dentist’s advice can help your body form a stable clot and begin the healing process safely.

4. Swelling and Bruising – When It Doesn’t Go Down

Swelling is common following an extraction, but it should begin to subside within a couple of days. When aftercare instructions are ignored—such as applying ice packs, keeping your head elevated, and taking anti-inflammatory medications as directed—swelling can increase and stick around longer than it should. In some cases, this may be a sign of infection or trauma to the area, and you may need further evaluation to ensure everything is healing properly.

5. Delayed Healing – Prolonging Your Recovery

Every guideline your dentist gives you after an extraction supports your body’s natural healing process. Ignoring advice like eating soft foods, maintaining good oral hygiene, and avoiding tobacco products can significantly slow down recovery. This not only leaves you uncomfortable for longer, but it can also increase the risk of secondary complications. Proper aftercare gets you back to normal faster, with fewer detours.

Tooth extraction doesn’t have to be complicated, but recovery depends heavily on what you do afterward. Dr. Natalie Provenzano and her compassionate team at Natalie K. Provenzano DDS, Inc. in San Jose, CA, are here to guide you every step of the way. If you have questions about your aftercare instructions or are experiencing discomfort following an extraction, don’t hesitate to reach out. Call the office today at (408) 226-2542 to schedule a follow-up appointment or get the personalized care you deserve.
