Smile Bright: 7 Easy Tips To Increase The Longevity Of Your Dental Implants

Implant Dental Care in San Jose CA Area

Dental implants are a remarkable option for tooth replacement, offering both aesthetic and functional benefits. However, it is essential that you take steps to properly care for your implants to ensure that they remain in optimal condition. Dr. Natalie Provenzano at Natalie K. Provenzano DDS, Inc. in San Jose, California, offers seven top tips for maintaining the health and longevity of your dental implants.

  1. A Commitment To Good Oral Hygiene: Just like natural teeth, dental implants require diligent oral hygiene to prevent plaque buildup and gum disease. Brushing your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and flossing daily will ensure that food particles and bacteria from between your teeth and around the implant are removed.
  2. Use Non-Abrasive Dental Products: Avoid abrasive toothpaste and mouthwash, as these can scratch the surface of your dental implant and potentially damage the surrounding gum tissue. Choose gentle dental products your dentist recommends to protect your implant and oral health.
  3. Don’t Skip Your Dental Checkups: Regular dental checkups are critical for monitoring the condition of your dental implants. During an examination, your dentist will check your dental implants for any issues. Schedule routine appointments with your dentist, who can assess the condition of your implant, perform professional cleanings, and provide personalized advice on caring for your oral health.
  4. Protect Against Teeth Grinding: If you grind your teeth at night (bruxism), this can put excessive pressure on your dental implant and increase the risk of complications. Talk to your dentist about wearing a custom-made night guard to protect your implant and prevent damage caused by teeth grinding while you sleep.
  5. Avoid Chewing on Hard Objects: Dental implants are strong and durable, but they are not indestructible. Avoid biting down on hard objects such as ice, pen caps, or hard candies, as this can put undue stress on your implant and potentially lead to fractures or other damage. Also, refrain from chewing on extra sticky or hard foods since they, too, can have hazardous effects on your dental implants.
  6. Quit Smoking: Smoking not only increases the risk of implant failure but also impedes the body’s ability to heal properly after implant surgery. One of the best things you can do to prolong the life of your dental implants and enhance your general oral health is to quit smoking.
  7. Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals are essential for supporting the health of your gums and jawbone, which are crucial for the success of your dental implant. Stay hydrated and include foods high in calcium, vitamin C, and protein to promote optimal healing and longevity.
